Mission Statement

The African Anthropocene Research Centre is dedicated to the study and dissemination of knowledge about the African Anthropocene. Our mission is to conduct groundbreaking research on the impact of human activity on African ecosystems, cultures, and societies during the Anthropocene epoch. Through multimedia and written content, we aim to build public interest and awareness, assist with funding applications, and provide a space for academic engagement. We welcome a diverse audience, including the general public, academics, researchers, students, and potential scholarship applicants, promoting easy access to new research and projects while fostering dynamic engagement.

Founder & Director

Sandra Swart

Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Founder and Director of the centre since 2024.
